Leslie, you work Lifeline's referring physicians today, mostly by phone and in person. This page counts them, county by county, across the three counties your eight offices sit in. It sizes each group that sends patients to outpatient therapy, so the question becomes which of them your team reaches today.

Your site notes that Pennsylvania's direct access law lets patients start without a referral, and that some insurance plans still require one. The physician relationship still matters, and that is the list below. It is about relationships with the physicians who decide where a patient goes for therapy, and nothing in it involves paying for a referral.

Who sends patients to therapy
Eight groups, all counted, in the three counties your offices sit in. Each clinician is counted once, under the specialty they list as primary. Clinicians also sit inside the practices and hospitals counted beside them, so never add a practice or hospital count to a clinician count.
Orthopedic surgeons
Post-surgical recovery, joint injuries and rotator cuff tears are on your physical therapy list. After an operation, the surgeon writes the therapy order.
Who decides: the surgeon, and in larger groups the physician assistant or the staff who send the therapy order.

Primary care
Back pain, joint pain and trouble walking often come up first at a primary care visit. That is where many patients ask where to go next.

Sports medicine physicians
Your Forest Hills page leads with orthopedic and sports-injury rehab. These are the physicians who treat sports injuries without surgery.

Physiatrists and pain physicians
Radiculopathy and degenerative disc disease are on your list. These physicians manage back and neck pain without surgery, and therapy is often part of the plan.

Who decides: the pulmonologist, cardiologist or ear, nose and throat physician who manages the condition.

Where the openings are

Washington and Mercer are small enough to cover fully. Each has one office. Between them they hold about 330 primary care physicians, about 35 orthopedic surgeons and 8 acute care hospitals. That is a list one person can work end to end, and it tells you quickly whether a county with one office is fully covered.

Allegheny is where most of the numbers are. About 1,700 primary care physicians and about 250 orthopedic surgeons, against six of your eight offices. There the useful question is which slice your team covers today.

Your other service lines have their own referrers. Pulmonary rehab, cardiac therapy and vestibular therapy each have their own specialists: pulmonologists, cardiologists, neurologists, and ear, nose and throat physicians. Across the three counties that is about 740 physicians, most of them in Allegheny, on a list separate from the orthopedic one.
Built from the national provider registry (NPPES, the July 2026 file) and the federal hospital file (CMS, the July 2026 release). Office counties come from the Census Bureau geocoder, run on the addresses in your office locator. Clinicians and organizations are counted by the practice address they registered, placed in the county that holds most of their ZIP code, under the specialty they list as primary. Hospitals are placed in the county the federal file gives them; children's hospitals are left out. A registration proves enumeration only, not that someone is practicing today or takes referrals. Counts are banded deliberately: under 20 exact, then rounded.
